Entry Requirements

Entrants must hold a degree from a UK higher education institution or equivalent qualification and also have GCSE Grade C or equivalent in Mathematics, English Language and Science. Essex Primary SCITT adheres to the Government recommendation that the degree should be a 2:2 or above. Entrants will be expected to have had recent and relevant experience with primary aged children in an educational environment. They must demonstrate an ability to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English.

From 1 September 2012 pre-entry skills tests in literacy and numeracy were introduced. Anyone applying for an initial teacher training (ITT) is required to have passed the skills tests before starting the course. Once an applicant has submitted an application form for an ITT course, he or she will be eligible to book skills tests via the DfE website, www.education.gov.uk

Skills tests candidates receive their first attempt at each test free of charge but will be charged for resits. The charge will be £19.25 for each resit with the charge being levied at the time of booking the test on-line.

All candidates are encouraged to use the practice material available on the DfE website, www.education.gov.uk The practice material includes interactive tests which will help candidates to decide if they are ready to take the test or need to improve their skills further before booking a test.

Some candidates may be eligible for special arrangements to be made when taking their skills tests particularly if they have hearing impairment, visual impairment, physical disabilities, dyslexia and EAL. Please contact the special arrangements advisors on the skills tests helpline to ensure you get the correct arrangements.
